Thought Crime? “FACEBOOK MONITORS YOUR PRIVATE MESSAGES AND PHOTOS FOR CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, REPORTS THEM TO POLICE”

From the source:

“Facebook has a new little known software that monitors your profile chat and pictures for criminal activity. The software will proceed to alert an employee at the company who will then decide whether to call authorities or not.

The software will monitor individuals who have a ‘loose’ relationship on social media networks, according to an interview with Facebook Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan.

Reuters interview with the security officer explains, Facebook’s software focuses on conversations between members who have a loose relationship on the social network. For example, if two users aren’t friends, only recently became friends, have no mutual friends, interact with each other very little, have a significant age difference, and/or are located far from each other, the tool pays particular attention.

The scanning program looks for certain phrases found in previously obtained chat records from criminals, including sexual predators (because of the Reuters story, we know of at least one alleged child predator who is being brought before the courts as a direct result of Facebook’s chat scanning). The relationship analysis and phrase material have to add up before a Facebook employee actually looks at communications and makes the final decision of whether to ping the authorities.

“We’ve never wanted to set up an environment where we have employees looking at private communications, so it’s really important that we use technology that has a very low false-positive rate,” Sullivan toldReuters.

The software has been used to help gather information on potential murder suspects as well. In just one case, 62 pages of information, pictures, chat and posts where gathered and handed over to local authorities by Facebook in a recent subpoena request.

Facebook most likely wants to keep this software secret since most people do not think fondly of someone rummaging around their private messages and photos looking for criminal activities. Also how far is this system willing to go and will they soon pursue minor crimes or even thought crime?”

Forensic scientist identifies suspicious ‘back doors’ running on every iOS device

Forensic scientist identifies suspicious ‘back doors’ running on every iOS device

“Forensic scientist and author Jonathan Zdziarski has posted the slides (PDF) from his talk at the Hackers On Planet Earth (HOPE/X) conference in New York called Identifying Backdoors, Attack Points, and Surveillance Mechanisms in iOS Devices.

The HOPE conference started in 1994 and bills itself as “one of the most creative and diverse hacker events in the world.”

Zdziarski, better known as the hacker “NerveGas” in the iPhone development community, worked as dev-team member on many of the early iOS jailbreaks and is the author of five iOS-related O’Reilly books including “Hacking and Securing iOS Applications.”

In December 2013, an NSA program dubbed DROPOUTJEEP was reveled by security researcher Jacob Appelbaum that reportedly gave the agency almost complete access to the iPhone.

The leaked document, dated 2008, noted that the malware required “implant via close access methods” (presumably physical access to the iPhone) but ominously noted that “a remote installation capability will be pursued for a future release.”

In his talk, Zdziarski demonstrates “a number of undocumented high-value forensic services running on every iOS device” and “suspicious design omissions in iOS that make collection easier.” He also provides examples of forensic artifacts acquired that “should never come off the device” without user consent.

According to one slide the iPhone is “reasonably secure” to a typical attacker and the iPhone 5 and iOS 7 are more secure from everybody except Apple and the government. But he notes that Apple has “worked hard to ensure that it can access data on end-user devices on behalf of law enforcement” and links to Apple’s Law Enforcement Process Guidelines, which clearly spell this out. ”

Red-Light Camera Scam: Judge Throws Out Tickets, Could Have Major Implications

Source: http://therundownlive.com/red-light-camera-scam-judge-throws-out-tickets-could-have-major-implications/

“A Norfolk judge decided to throw out the red light camera ticket for an entire intersection. This could have major implications for the city, and others that have corrupt revenue generation.

“He didn’t believe it was fair, and acquitted me of the charges,” said David Butler.

Butler credits a story, ran on red-light cameras in Norfolk that showed how the city shortened yellow light times on the very day enforcement started.

Not only that but physicists investigated the cities lights and found them at some points to be impossible even to make it through the intersection legally during the yellow.

If drivers have a proper yellow light time, there should be no problem.”

Cameras in TV and cable box watching you? More Proof?

Over the past ten years I have read various articles stating there is technology in televisions, cable boxes, and computers that can secretly monitor our every more. There is even a rumor that web flash allows sites to watch you through your camera.

Check out this link on a webcam vulnerability through flash: http://feross.org/webcam-spy/

But recently I read this goodie.

Cameras in Your Cable Box Watching You (See the Built in Camera & Microphone)

Link: http://weirdonlinenews.com/?p=358

Excerpt:

“Rather than you watching television, it is they who are watching you! Verizon has recently patented a cable DVR box that will use audio and video to record and analyze what’s going on in your living room so that they can provide targeted ads in real time on the TV to suit what’s going on. Now, one reason may be advertising and marketing, but since they can listen and watch, just think, smile you may be on candid camera!”
